Syr Hugh win the Welsh Cup

-

ALL hail the girls of Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen, Caernarfon - Welsh Schools FA Under-15 Cup winners 2016/17.

Taking on Ysgol Glantaf, Cardiff, in last Sunday’s final at Park Hall, TNS, Syr Hugh were involved in a 1-1 draw before the match went to penalties and Jennah Williams’ decisive kick in sudden death secured the trophy.

Captain Jody Cain led her team out of the tunnel to the Champions League theme and they then lined up to sing the national anthem.

It was a fairly equal first half, Anest Roberts hitting the crossbar twice for Syr Hugh and Catrin Williams producing some great saves to stop Glantaf from going ahead.

Syr Hugh were on fire after half time. A throw-in from Jessica Lane landed at the feet of Anest Roberts, who turned into the box and placed the ball nicely in the corner of the goal to put the Cofis ahead.

Syr Hugh had a few more chances to seal the victory, but a last-minute break saw Glantaf equalise.

A 1-1 score meant it went straight to penalties, which stood at 5-5 before Glantaf missed and Jennah Williams kept her nerve to convert the winning kick.

Squad: Jody Cain, Jessica Lane, Kasey Allsup-Davies, Erin Allen-Jones, Cara Jones, Catrin WIlliams, Elli Johnstone, Anest Roberts, Nel Jones, Malan Hughes, Cara O’Neill, Jennah Williams, Erin Evans, Betsan Roberts, Erin Williams.

Coach Tania Jones said: “We got through to the semi-final of this competition four years ago, and after hard work and dedication in player development, working with local clubs and plenty of extra curricular training in school, these girls have made me proud.

“We have worked hard on set plays and I’m so glad we had a penalty training session at The Oval on Friday before the final; the girls deserved it.”

Head of PE Bryn Williams added: “Thanks to Tania Jones for all her dedication and time in coaching the girls and to Gofal Bro for sponsoring the new kit.”

To reach the final, the girls won their local round and went through to represent Eryri in the Welsh Cup.

They beat Ysgol Darland away in Wrexham 4-2 before defeating Ysgol Llanidloes 3-1 on penalties in the quarter-final after a 3-3 draw.

A home draw in the semi-final against Ysgol Penweddig and a penalty from Anest Roberts ensured a 1-0 win.
