Cup glory for Bontnewydd
CPD BONTNEWYDD may be outsiders for the Gwynedd League title but at least they have secured one piece of silverware this season.
Bont retained the Gwynedd Safeflue Shield with a 1-0 win over Llanystumdwy in the final at Nantlle Vale.
Llanystumdwy started brightly, creating a few chances early in the game, with Carl Jones in the Bont goal pulling off a couple of good saves and showing safe hands under pressure. Midway through the half a long throw by Darren Phillips landed at the feet of Bont’s Morgan Roberts, the big man holding off a defender to turn and guide the ball into the far corner of the net to break the deadlock.
In the second half Llanystumdwy pressed for the equaliser, but on the break Roberts leapt to head the ball which look destined for the back of the net, only for the opposition goalkeeper to pull off a stunning save. The final 10 minutes saw ‘Stumdwy throw everything forward in search of the leveller, but the back-four marshalled by Andrew Garlick and man of the match Terry Jones held firm to ensure Bont lifted the Saflue Trophy for the second season running under the management of Alun Gwilym.
Meanwhile, the battle to be crowned Gwynedd League champions will go down to the final matches of the season.
Tomorrow night (Thursday) Bodedern Athletic will clinch the title if they win at Menai Bridge. Any other result and the issue will not be decided until after Saturday’s match between Bontnewydd and Aberffraw. The current standings are: Bodedern: played 21 points 53 (GD +52)
Aberffraw: played 21 points 51 (GD + 41)
Bontnewydd: played 21 points 50 (GD +44).
A draw for Boded at the Bridge will probably be enough to seal the title as that would put them on 54 points which only Aberffraw could match if they win at Bont.
However, Boded have a superior goal difference of plus 11 over Berffro at present. For Bont to finish as champions, Bodedern would need to lose at Menai and the Caernarfon area side would need to defeat Aberffraw by a huge margin to steal top spot on GD. Whatever happens, it has been a great Gwynedd League season.
