SAVED BY HER PHONE

Mynytho woman caught up in Manchester terror blast

- Hywel Trewyn

Mum was collecting daughter from fateful gig:

A WOMAN seriously injured in the Manchester Arena terror attack owes her life to her mobile phone, her husband has said.

Steve Bridgett said his wife Lisa, of Mynytho, near Pwllheli, lost the middle finger of her left hand when she was hit by a steel nut from the bomb detonated in the arena’s foyer last Monday night.

The nut then entered her cheek and came to rest in her nose.

“The fact she was on her phone at the time has probably saved her life,” said Mr Bridgett.

“The nut has hit her phone which has, more than likely, not only diverted it, but also slowed it down considerably. Her nose is fine as the nut entered through her cheek, so just a scar to deal with.”

Mrs Bridgett had gone to collect her daughter Ashleigh and a friend from the Ariana Grande concert when suicide bomber Salman Abedi struck.

He killed 22 people and injured 119, of whom 20 remain in a critical condition.

Mrs Bridgett, who is managing director of boat company Blue Water North Wales Ltd in Pwllheli, has received treatment at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Wythenshawe hospital for fractures and shrapnel injuries.

Mr Bridgett, writing on Facebook, added: “Lisa is in a positive mood and feels very lucky to be alive, witnessing first hand what could have been.

“She has suffered multiple injuries, including losing the middle finger from her left hand, which was caused by a steel nut that hit her finger then went into her phone and eventually coming to rest in her nose.”

He added that, among other injuries, his wife’s ankle was fractured by shrapnel.

Mr Bridgett thanked police, hospital staff and an arena steward called Peter, who helped Mrs Bridgett out of the venue and took her to safety.

“I have spoken to Peter since and we are going to meet up,” he said. “Onwards and upwards ... she’ll soon be up again!

“Thank you for everyone’s wishes and offers of support. It means a lot.”
