TRIBUTES have been pouring in after Irfon Williams passed away.

NHS charity Awyr Las, who Mr Williams’ #teamirfon campaign raised more than £150,000 for, described him as a “great man”..

Head of fundraisin­g Kirsty Thomson said: “Irfon was special, you only have to see how local communitie­s have embraced #teamirfon to know that. He genuinely wanted to help others and make healthcare services better for everyone. His smile was infectious and so was his enthusiasm and zest for life. He was just a great, great man.”

Gary Doherty, chief executive of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, added: “Irfon Williams, who worked at Ysbyty Gwynedd as a registered nurse, then manager of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, was a valued colleague who will be remembered for his courage and determinat­ion to live life to the full.

“He was passionate about providing the best care to patients. Irfon made a huge contributi­on to involving patients in their care and promoting mental wellbeing for all.

“Irfon was incredibly driven throughout his illness, setting up #teamirfon with Awyr Las and raising over £150,000, for which we and countless thousands of patients will be forever indebted to him. On behalf of BCUHB, I extend our deepest sympathies to Irfon’s family and wide circle of friends.”

Claudia McVie, Tenovus Cancer Care chief executive, said: “Everyone at Tenovus Cancer Care is so sad to hear of the passing of Irfon Williams. As a result of his campaignin­g, patients in Wales can now receive the drug Cetuximab to treat bowel cancer, a legacy to be very proud of.

“His ethos of working to making things better for cancer patients in Wales is one that is shared by Tenovus Cancer Care, and one that we will continue to work towards.”

Many politician­s took to social media to pay tribute to the father of five, with Anglesey AM Rhun ap Iorwerth tweeting: “His selflessne­ss and battle for life itself was an inspiratio­n. He will never be forgotten.”

Plaid Cymru AM Sian Gwenllian said: “He worked tirelessly with his Hawl i Fyw campaign, touching the lives of so many with his bravery, openness and warmth. It was a privilege to know him.”

Bangor Rugby Club paid tribute to Mr Williams, who used to play for them and coach youngsters. A statement said: “We have lost a true inspiratio­n. Irfon will always be fondly remembered by all.

“He always had a smile on his face and was always happy to help others.”
