Blaenau score crucial win over champions

ABERFFRAW have become the latest Anglesey club to secure Welsh Alliance League status.

The promotion of Berffro for the 2017/18 campaign will mean eight island teams competing in Division Two.

Runners-up in the Gwynedd League last season, Aberffraw join Amlwch Town, Bodedern Athletic, Cemaes Bay, Gaerwen, Llannerchy­medd, Llanfairpw­ll and Pentraeth in the second division.

Aberffraw manager Gerallt Roberts said: “This is a new chapter for the club as we enter our 10th season and we know that only hard work and 100% commitment will see us have any chance of doing well at this new level.

“We would like to take this chance to thank everyone involved in the Gwynedd League, which has been a fantastic league to be a part of over the last three seasons.”

Representi­ng Ynys MÔn in Division One are current champions Glantraeth, Llangefni Town and Trearddur Bay United, as well as Mynydd Llandegai from the Bangor area.

Prestatyn Sports, originally expelled from the league on ground criteria issues, won their appeal and will remain in Division Two.

The make-up of the Welsh Alliance this season will be:

Division One (16 teams): Barmouth and Dyffryn Utd, Conwy Borough, Glantraeth, Greenfield, Llanberis, Llandudno Albion, Llandyrnog Utd, Llangefni Town, Llanrug Utd, Llanrwst Utd, Mynydd Llandegai, Nantlle Vale, Penrhyndeu­draeth, Pwllheli, St Asaph City, Trearddur Bay Utd.

Division Two (16): Aberffraw, Amlwch Town, Blaenau Amateurs, Bodedern Athletic, Cemaes Bay, Gaerwen, Glan Conwy, Llannerchy­medd, Llanfairpw­ll, Llannefydd, Meliden, Mochdre Sports, Penmaenmaw­r Phoenix, Pentraeth, Prestatyn Sports, Y Felinheli.

Reserves Division (10): Bangor City, Denbigh Town, Holyhead Hotspur, Llandudno Junction, Llangefni Town, Llanrug Utd, Llanberis, Penmaenama­wr Phoenix, Prestatyn Town, Rhyl.

Winners of the Welsh Alliance League’s annual awards were: BLAENAU Ffestiniog celebrated a notable win over North Wales Coast Bowling League Division A champions Rhos Park A last weekend.

The Quarrymen recorded a 7-5 triumph in a match which ended 5-5 on games, but resulted in a home win due to a 13-point difference in the aggregates.

Stephen Jones did most to secure the all-important two-point bonus for Blaenau with an emphatic 21-3 victory.

Martin Wyn Hughes (21-9), Iwan Vaughan Jones (21-11), Dylan Vaughan Jones (21-15) and Barry John Hughes (21-17) were the other home successes.

Ffestiniog finished 173-160 ahead on the aggregates, the win keeping them out of the bottom two.

Caernarfon remain third-from-bottom of Division Two after a 7-5 home loss at the hands of Prestatyn Highbury. The games were evenly split, but the visitors claimed the overall win after topping the aggregates 180-162.

Caernarfon’s winners were Eiddon Jones (21-10), Des Hughes, Hanna Williams Jones and Steve Allan (all 21-16) and Dion Williams (21-17).

Penygroes were defeated by Copperfiel­ds 9-3 in Division C, Danelle Jones (21-11), Barry Wynne (21-16) and Aled Wynne (21-18) the away winners.

Criccieth are up to second in the Gwynedd Seniors League Division A after an emphatic 7-2 win at Benllech last Tuesday ( June 20).

Dick Jones was top block for the visitors on 21-11, Alun Parry recording a 21-12 result.

Emlyn Williams (21-16) and Tom Parry (21-19) also produced positive results for the away side, the pairs Bill Cutler and Reg Chapman (21-16) completing a good night.

Caernarfon crashed 9-0 at champions Llandudno A, Brian Jones (17-21) best for the visitors.

Other scores: Craig-y-Don A 7 Llanrwst 2; Bethesda A 1 Beaumaris A 8.

Division B leaders Dinas whitewashe­d Llanfairfe­chan A 9-0.

Phil Kirkham (21-2) and pairs Elfed Jones and Roger Giecco (21-2) were the biggest home winners.

Glenys Schofield (21-8), Brian Adams (21-9), Sheila Griffiths (21-10), Jane Chapman (21-12) and Roy Williams (21-14) completed the full set.

CAERNARFON player Finlay Prytherch was a 21-9 winner for Wales in their recent 441-415 victory over Derbyshire in the Drakes Pride Junior County Bowls Championsh­ip.

At the home venue of Benllech, birthday boy Harry Lawton (Rhos Park) led the way with a commanding 21-8 triumph. Subs Hari Owen and Emily Owen stepped in at games five and six respective­ly.
