Tidy-up on Maesincla

-

● Gwynedd’s Tidy Towns joined a partnership of local groups and individuals recently in a litterpick on the Maesincla housing estate in Caernarfon. This followed concern from many that litter was becoming a problem in parts of the estate. In total, 25 bin bags were collected by the group of 8 pickers. A large number of fly-tipped bundles of newspapers were found at two locations, together with general litter such as cans, bottles, crisp packets and wrappers carelessly discarded on open ground around the estate. The initiative was led by Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd’s Community Wardens Iolo Roberts and Dawn Jones and staff. They were also joined on the day by local PCSO Eurwen Williams, Gwynedd Council’s Tidy Towns Officer Jonathan Neale, Cadnant Ward Gwynedd Councillor and Chairman of Maesincla Eye, Cemlyn Rees Williams and Caernarfon Town Councillor Maria Sarnacki. Local Gwynedd Councillor, Cemlyn Rees Williams, said: ‘Thank you to all those who contributed to the recent litter-pick at Maesincla. It was a pleasure to be part of this initiative and the estate looked a lot tidier after the session. Nothing works better than a partnership approach to sorting local environmental problems, and so I would like to thank Cartrefi Cymunedol and all the contributors for giving their time to help.’ Gwynedd Council’s Highways and Municipal Cabinet Member Gareth Wyn Griffith, said: ‘It’s good that Tidy Towns can help enable events – such as the Maesincla litterpick – by providing interested groups with the basic equipment. Let’s hope that this inspires others to take part and also act to warn those who litter that it is unacceptable to the majority of responsible residents.’ CCG’s local Community Warden, said: ‘It was great to get so much support from our partners, councillors and residents to help clean up the Maesincla area. The session was so successful that we’re now hoping to organise more clean ups with local residents. CCG would like to thank Tidy Towns for providing the equipment.’’ Those who discard litter in a public place are committing a crime. Anyone found guilty of littering in any public place could face a court summons and a fine of up to £2,500. Gwynedd’s Tidy Towns scheme is funded by a Welsh Government grant which aims to improve the local environment.
