It was decided to dispense with the train trip in August as the time did not marry with the boat time. The speaker from Snowdonia National Park, Jess Easton was unwell and was substitute­d by Naomi. She spoke about the poet Hedd Wyn who was born Ellis Humphrey Evan in 1887. The family moved to the hill farm Yr Ysgwrn in Cwm Prysor where he was brought up. He attended school until he was 14 years old and then worked on his father’s farm. However he had already shown a talent for writing poetry having written his first poem at the age of 11. He was conscripte­d into the army and sent to Belgium where he was mortally wounded at the Battle of Passchenda­le in July 1917. He was posthumous­ly awarded the Bard’s Chair at the 1917 National Eisteddfod. The Chair was draped in a black shroud. Naomi said that when Snowdonia National Park bought Yr Ysgwrn it was in a bad state of repair. Yr Ysgwrn is now open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday between 10.30am and 4pm. Moragh Bradshaw thanked Naomi for her depiction of Hedd Wyn’s life. Next Meeting: July 11 when Michael Hewitt will be talking about the Liberal Arts. The vicar thanked everybody for their hard work during the year especially Mrs Edwina Lloyd Hughes who will be stepping down from her role as treasurer at the end of the year. Mrs Lloyd Hughes has been keeping the accounts in order for over 50 years. The new treasurer will be Mrs helen Williams Ellis. The other officials remain the same.
