Cofis pipped at post

-

CAERNARFON Cricket Club lost a thriller at home to Bethesda in the North Wales League 2nd XI West Division last Saturday.

Put into bat, the Cofis were only able to muster a modest 118-6 off their 40 overs.

Prysor Aled helped ensure the final total was respectable with a dashing 31 not out from 36 balls.

Opener Jason Parry was also going nicely before being run out for 22.

Grant Peisley (15) and Ian Morgan (12) reached double figures, but the feeling was the hosts had posted less than a convincing total.

The innings featured three runouts, with Andrew Day, Richard Lee Williams and Ryan Williams taking a wicket apiece for Pesda.

The away team’s reply proved a topsy-turvy affair, but they scrambled home on 119-9 off 39.5 overs - just two balls to spare.

Steve Jones was the difference, the Bethesda opener hitting 46, while Day added a vital 27 in the middle order.

Caernarfon certainly made the travellers work for their win, Simon Davis picking up 3-22 off 8.5 overs, while Llyr Erddyn Davies scooped 3-33, Jonathan Peris-Jones and Morgan one wicket apiece.

Points went 11-4 in Bethesda’s favour in what was only the Cofis’ second defeat of the season.

Caernarfon will hope for better when they travel to Holyhead this weekend.

Caernarfon now occupy fourth place in the table, but have two games in hand on the teams above them. ● Pwllheli seconds booked a good total at home to Dolgellau but still ended up losers in another Division Two West clash.

Inserted by their visitors at Parc Bodegroes, Pwll reached 158-4 off their 40 overs.

Owen Reilly top-scored with 56, skipper Neil Williams struck 38 and Nicholas Butterworth 35 not out.

Unfortunately for the hosts, Dolgellau’s batsmen proved just a little too good, making it to 159-7 off 37.3 overs.

Butterworth produced a great spell, returning figures of 3-14 off nine overs, while Osian Williams scooped 3-27 from nine.

The points went 11-4 to Dol and leaves Pwllheli next-to-bottom and still seeking a first win of the campaign at the ninth attempt.

Second-place Pwllheli firsts, who were without a fixture last weekend, are now 19 points adrift of leaders Northop in the 1st XI First Division.

This Saturday sees Pwll return to action with a home test against Bersham.

The Colliers are currently next-tobottom with just two victories on their log.

After winning their first eight matches in a canter, Pwll encountered a cancellation before suffering backto-back losses at the hands of Northop and Bethesda.

However, last time out the Llyn men bounced back with a comfortable triumph over Dolgellau and remain strong promotion contenders.
