Kids shine in ‘historic’ race
DESPITE the bad weather,eather overo er 230 children in five different age categories took part in the Snowdon Junior race in Llanberis.
This was the first time that the Gwynedd Council Sport for Life team had organised the race as part of the annual Snowdon International Race sponsored by Jewson.
Exactly five minutes after the main race began, the children received the thrill of setting off from the Start/Finish line, cheered on by the hundreds of people who had assembled in Cae’r Ddol in Llanberis.
The five categories, under ten, 12, 14, 16, 18, ran distances between 0.8 miles for the under tens to four miles for the under 18s.
Following the race there was an award ceremony to honour the top three finishers in each category.
Councillor Craig ab Iago, Gwynedd Council Cabinet Member for Healthy Gwynedd said: “It was an honour to see so many happy children and young people taking part in this historic race.
“Getting outside and challenging yourself is a great way to improve your health and wellbeing, as these young people have shown so clearly.”
The Gwynedd Council Sport for Life team would like to thank Mr Stephen Edwards – organiser of the Snowdon Race for offering the team the opportunity to organise the junior race, to Matt Ward for all his support and commentary and to Dr Zigs for sponsoring the race which ensured that each child that took part took home a memento.
The Snowdon race brought to the end the Dal i Fynd Cross Country Series, and the four races in Coed y Brenin, Faenol, Plas Menai and Llanberis, where over 1,250 children have taken part. The series is going from strength to strength and the team is already planning for next year.
