School gets poem on plaque as memory of slate festival
INIGO Jones are delighted to have sponsored an engraved Welsh slate plaque as part of Gwyl Lechi /Festival of Slate at Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle.
The slate plaque was engraved with a Welsh poem, written by some of the pupils at the school, as part of the festival and it will be displayed prominently at the school for years to come.
The Gwyl Lechi/Festival of Slate was embraced by all departments within the school and included a model of a slate incline showing how it worked at the slate quarries, a band that included a xylophone incorporating slate which had a unique sound, old documents relating to the geology and history of the local slate quarries in the Nantlle Valley, craft items made by the pupils in slate and some of the pupils also participated in an excellent short play about the Great Penrhyn strike 1900-1903.
All pupils learnt something about slate and it illustrated how important the slate industry has been to all aspects of life in the slate areas of Gwynedd.
It is hoped that similar events will take place in other schools in Gwynedd as the school was delighted how all the pupils interacted and learnt something and the slate plaque provided by Inigo Jones will be a reminder for years to come of this event.
Events like this one will certainly help in the current application for the Welsh Slate industry to attain World Heritage status which would be a tremendous boost to the local economy if successful.
Inigo Jones was established in 1861 and is open all year for self guided tours and has a large retail outlet with unique slate items as well as other craft products.
