A head for heights

Caernarfon Herald - - NEWS -

A FUNDRAISER claims to have made history after having his hair cut on the top of Snowdon.

Elfed “Gyrn Goch” Williams has challenged himself to walk up Wales’ highest peak – Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) – 52 times this year, raising funds for the Wales Air Ambulance (WAA) that saved his son’s life.

Father-of-two Mr Williams, 57, of Trefor, Gwynedd, said: “In August, 2013, Tomos Huw was unloading a lorry at Blaenau Ffestiniog when a half-ton piece of plastic toppled over, knocking him off the lorry on to a concrete loading pad.”

Tomos, then 20, suffered a fractured skull and a blood clot on his brain.

Colleagues dialled 999, and the WAA was scrambled from Caernarfon. Within 40 minutes, Tomos was at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor.

His injuries were so severe he had to be transferred by air ambulance to the major trauma unit at North Staffs Hospital, Stoke.

Mr Williams said: “If it was not for the Wales Air Ambulance, Tomos would not have survived.”

Mr Williams, a warden at Glynllifon College, Caernarfon, hopes to raise £5,000 for the charity and has already reached £3,400. In a previous walking challenge, he raised £3,000.

During his 37th ascent, Mr Williams, his friend, barber Jason Parry, of Magic Clippers, Caernarfon, and Mr Williams’ former colleague, Gerald Parry, believe they made history by completing the first hair cut at the top of Yr Wyddfa.

Mr Williams has overcome snow, ice, heavy rain and strong winds in the past eight months on his treks up the mountain. Braving the wind on August 9, they took photographs and a video.

Mr Parry said: “It was a cloudy day and, with a small audience of around 15 people, I started with Elfed’s haircut on the summit marker. I believe it’s the first time anyone has had a haircut on the summit itself.”

Mr Williams said: “There was no need for Jason to do any brushing of the floor this time.”

Snowdonia Mountain Railway’s Carrie Probin said: “We’re not aware of anyone having a haircut on Snowdon before, not officially or in the building. But, given the number of visitors each year, we can’t say for sure.”

Mr Williams is planning his 39th ascent this weekend. He said: “It doesn’t get any easier.”

On December 8, he is organising a Cyngerdd Dathlu Her 52 concert with singers Rhys Meirion, also a WAA fundraiser, Sioned Terry, Dilwyn Morgan and Cor Caernarfon at Galeri, Caernarfon. Tickets will be on sale soon.
