Cofis goal spree wipes out early season shocker

- by Paul Evans

CAERNARFON Town’s 2-1 home loss to Holyhead Hotspur provided a nasty wake-up call – but Iwan Williams’ men have responded in the perfect fashion.

The Canaries followed up last Wednesday’s epic 3-2 victory at Porthmadog with a 7-0 demolition of Denbigh Town at The Oval last Saturday

Williams provided a surprise with his starting line-up by bringing in Danny Brookwell to lead the line up front, Jamie Breese taking an unaccustomed place on the bench. He also gave Chris Williams a first start of the season.

Caernarfon almost scored straight from the kick off when captain Nathan Craig made an audacious attempt to score from the halfway line and back-pedalling keeper Jon Hill-Dunt did well to get his fingertips to the ball to keep it away from his goal.

Denbigh were under intense pressure in the opening stages and finally succumbed in the 13th minute after excellent work on the left flank by Darren Thomas, who found Gareth Evans in the six-yard area. The recent signing from Llandudno lashed into the roof of the net. The hosts’ lead was doubled in the 19th minute when Evans was brought down in the box and Craig stepped up to send Hill-Dunt the wrong way from the spot.

In the 34th minute an excellent through ball from Joe Williams released Evans who was initially thwarted by Hill-Dunt, but the ball scooped up and the midfielder was sharp enough to head into the net from an acute angle.

Danny Brookwell added a fourth five minutes later after Ryan Wil- liams had tricked his way into the penalty area and forced Hill-Dunt into an acrobatic one-handed save.

The ball fell into the path of Brookwell, who had the easiest of putaways into an empty net to make it 4-0 at half time.

The second period was again dominated by the Cofis and on 52 minutes Jay Gibbs provided the killer ball for Chris Williams to score from three yards. Substitute Breese soon joined the action and had an immediate impact, providing further impetus to the front line and stretching Denbigh’s defence with his clever running down the channels.

The striker created a sixth goal for his side when he put Thomas through on goal.

Although the ‘Cofi Messi’ was disappointed to see his effort cleared off the line after he had Picture: RICHARD BIRCH expertly rounded Hill-Dunt, the ball fell nicely for Brookwell, who snapped up the opportunity to complete his brace.

Breese provided his second assist when he took the ball away from Jack Riley on the right touchline before storming into the penalty area and setting up Thomas, who drilled low past Hill-Dunt from the edge of the penalty area to complete the scoring
