CAUGHT ON CAMERA

-

POLICE have released frightening dashcam footage of a man driving in a “shockingly poor manner” along the Ogwen Valley stretch of the A5.

Philip Boyes, 48, was filmed by officers in an unmarked car using the mountain pass as a race track, driving at speeds of up to 80mph and repeatedly crossing solid white lines.

Boyes of Penrhos Road, Bangor, told magistrates at Flintshire that he had no excuse and admitted a careless driving charge.

North Wales Police released the footage after the hearing as a warning to other drivers.

PC Gerallt Williams, of the roads policing unit, said: “Boyes’ driving clearly fell well below the standard of a careful and competent driver.

“His actions in crossing the solid white lines, which he did on at least 11 occasions, could have had dire consequences.”

“We are releasing footage of this incident in the hope that others will take notice that practises such as crossing solid while lines are extremely dangerous and will be investigated by North Wales Police.”

Boyes of Penrhos Road, Bangor, was fined £338 with £85 costs and a £33 surcharge – and six penalty points were imposed on his driving licence.

Prosecutor Brian Robinson said an officer in full uniform was driving in an unmarked police car along the A5 between Bethesda and Capel Curig on July 1, when the Boyes’ silver Peugeot car overtook him and a van in front, against solid centre white lines.

Boyes’s vehicle reached speeds of 80mph and crossed over the centre white lines on at least 11 occasions.

He was also on the wrong side of the road on a blind bend.”
