THE Snowdon Mountain Railway has announced the winners of its 2017 photographic competition.

Earlier in the year the railway, which climbs five miles from Llanberis to the top of Wales’ highest peak, asked amateur photographers to submit their best images of its trains, summit building and the stunning scenery around it.

Over 200 entries were received from keen snappers across Wales, the UK and Europe who sent in their favourite photos taken along the railway’s route.

Alan Kendall, general manager of Snowdon Mountain Railway, said staff shortlisted five images and then asked Cllr Kevin Morris Jones to choose the top three.

The winner was Adrian Evans from Rhyl with a colour image of The Snowdon Lily being pushed by a steam engine.

Mr Kendall said: “It’s been a really tough job deciding on the three winning images for this year’s competition.

“We were extremely pleased with the amount of entries received and the quality too.”

Cllr Morris Jones, who also works on the railway, said: “Each of the final five images were excellent in terms of balancing the scenery and the railway, so it was a very difficult choice.

“But congratulations must go to Adrian Evans for his beautiful colour image of the Snowdon Lily, a very worthy winner.”

Darren Thomas from Winchester was placed second with his monochrome image showing a steamer climbing the mountain and Vincent Palmer from Birmingham with his image of two diesels at the summit was third.

Adrian’s prize is a VIP steam trip to the summit, including an overnight stay at the Royal Victoria Hotel in Llanberis, while the runners-up won return trips to the summit on the steam and diesel services respectively.

The winning images are on display at the Snowdon Mountain Railway’s ticket office in Llanberis. The other entries are still available to browse online at the railway’s website.
