Young Bro turn on style to give leaders a scare

-

BRO Ffestiniog’s young charges put up a good battle before going down 49-20 at Division One North leaders Nant Conwy last weekend.

Nant stretched their advantage at the summit to eight points after seeing off their spirited visitors.

It was a third win for the Conwy Valley side against the Quarrymen this term, having previously defeated them 64-5 away in the league and 34-8 in the National Plate at Trefriw.

A hard-fought but somewhat disappointing game took place at Pant Carw, the severe cold and damp conditions not conducive to a classic.

Both sides made a number of basic, unforced errors, but despite all of the young Bro team’s efforts it was Nant who secured a seventh straight league triumph.

With barely four minutes on the clock, Nant scored their first try of the afternoon through Arthur Lennon, who added two successful penalties.

Huw Parry replied with a try for Bro, but Morgan Dafydd then crossed for the hosts and Lennon put over a conversion.

Huw James landed a penalty for the visitors to make it 18-8 at the interval.

Nant began the second period strongly, Robin Glyn and Gethin Vaughan adding tries to secure the bonus point, Lennon improving one.

Tom James went over for the travellers before Sion Pringle claimed Nant’s fifth touchdown.

Derwyn Williams then dotted down for the hosts, Lennon boosting with the boot for 42-13.

Parry responded with Bro’s third try, James adding the extras.

But Lennon rounded things off with a Nant try he converted himself for a personal haul of 24 points. SCORERS Nant - T: Lennon 2, M Dafydd, R Glyn, G Vaughan, Pringle, D Williams. P: Lennon 2. C: Lennon 4.

Bro - T: H Parry 2, T James. P: James. C: James.

● Bro, who lie ninth in the table, are next in action on December 30, when they welcome a Dolgellau team two places below them to Cae Dolawel.

Ffestiniog will be out for revenge, having lost 20-12 at Dolgellau in a keen contest back in September.
