WE’LL MISS YOU

Sandra steps down after 40 years as lollipop lady

- Eryl Crump

A lollipop lady who has spent decades helping youngsters cross the road - and now looks after some of their children - is hanging up her pole for the last time.

Sandra Roberts has been patrolling outside Ysgol Bro Lleu in Penygroes near Caernarfon since 1977, but will end her long career on the last day of the autumn term.

On patrol on one of her last days in the job this week, she told the Herald she had mixed feelings about giving up the job she loves.

Mrs Roberts said: “I’ll miss the children but I think the time is right now. I’ve done 40 years.

“I’m crossing over children now whose parents I used to cross over as little children.

“It will be a little bit weird but the time has come.”

After retiring, Mrs Roberts hopes to enjoy a few more holidays.

“I love my holidays,” said the mumof-four.

“I will look after my grandchildren and spend some more time with my husband, who’s retired as well.”

Her daughter Tina, who lives in Groeslon, said: “She has gone out to cross the schoolchildren every school day in all weathers.

“She is an amazing mum, and in all that time she has also been the local Avon lady.

“A few years ago, she was also helping out with the morris dancers and rainbow groups, so has devoted a lot of her time to the village, where she is very popular.”

Gerallt Jones, head of Ysgol Bro Lleu, said: “Anti Sandra has given 40 years of service and created relationships with several generations.

“We are very grateful for all the hard work she has done and wish her a happy retirement. Thanks for everything.”

A parent of a child at Ysgol Bro Lleu added: “Sandra is cheery in all weathers and knows the name of every child on her beat, even those who have moved on to secondary school and beyond.

“Everyone in Penygroes wishes her a very long and happy retirement.”

Although school crossing patrols have been cut in recent years, Gwynedd council intend to replace Mrs Roberts.

Paula Owen, from the council’s road safety team, said: “We’d like to thank Sandra for her fantastic service.

“We have advertised to fill the role, but have not been successful so far.

“We’d ask anyone interested in the role of school crossing patrol to contact us on 01286 679439.”
