Poppy project marks ultimate sacrifice

-

THIS week we are with the Amlwch Poppy Project, where the members are asking for help with their major project.

2018 marks the centenary of the end of the First World War and here, the group tell us how they hope to commemorate this using the ultimate symbol of Remembrance, the poppy:

“It had long been the dream of Miriam Sanders, the Amlwch and District Poppy Appeal Organiser, to have a ‘Weeping Wall’ feature on the front of the St. Eleth Church in Amlwch, in remembrance of all lives lost in conflict but, this year especially, those 101 local lives lost in the Great War.

“At the end of last year, Miriam, in conjunction with Ann Tooze of the Amlwch Community Group ‘Caruamlwch’, put a plea out on social media for any knitters or crocheters willing to lend a hand and come together to knit and crochet poppies to create the display and bring this dream to a reality.

“The response has been overwhelming and a separate Facebook group has been formed, The Amlwch Poppy Project, which has 165 members, increasing daily! Here, ladies can share patterns, ask advice, and offer support to one another.

“The Reverend Kevin Ellis has kindly allowed us to meet, every Tuesday evening from 7pm, in the wonderful surroundings of St. Eleth Church.”

“The ladies stay for as long as they like, or simply pop in to drop off their poppies and collect more yarn and have a chat.

“Word has spread and we have ladies knitting and crocheting at home in most districts on Anglesey, and with family and friends connections, there are poppies being made in various parts of the UK and as far away as Australia!

“We have ladies of all ages and experience, some starting completely from scratch but just eager to learn and to help the cause and the com- munity. A smaller display will be made with purple poppies, in remembrance of all the animals, such as horses, dogs and birds who played a vital role in the war and paid the ultimate price .

“Also, if we have enough poppies available, we plan to make other displays around Amlwch and its sur- rounding ro districts, in order to bring br all communities together. “As well as all the offers of help, wwe have had kind donations from lolocal businesses and national yarn ccompanies.” ● If anyone feels they would like to get involved, Reverend Ellis has k kindly agreed that poppies can be s sent to his address: The Rectory, Bull Bay Road, AAmlwch, Anglesey. LL68 9EA. Patterns for the poppies can be ffound at:- www.facebook.com/ amlwchpoppyproject or by email from:- caruamlwch@gmail.com.
