Stairway to Nefyn for United in cup

-

NEFYN United advanced to the NWCFA Junior Cup quarter-finals after beating neighbours Llanystumdwy 6-5 on penalties in an epic tie.

The win set up a home test against Rhuddlan Town of Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Division One in the last eight.

Last Saturday’s all-Gwynedd League tussle at Cae’r Delyn saw Llan almost take the lead on five minutes, Following a corner by Iwan Lloyd, Tom Williams got his head to the ball but his effort flew a foot wide.

Two minutes later Nefyn keeper Dafydd Jones saved from goalmachine Sion Parry.

Nefyn settled and should have gone in front after good work from Daniel Roberts, who fed Mark Dunn but he shot wide.

In the 38th minute, ‘Stumdwy went in front as Nefyn failed to clear their lines and a cross into the box resulted in Parry making it 1-0.

A minute before the break, Nefyn were on level terms as Meic Williams flicked the ball to Roberts, who found the net.

United felt they should have had a penalty on the hour as Gethln Trenholme seemed to be pushed in the box but referee Iwan Ellis waved play on.

Roberts, unmarked with goal at his mercy from 12 yards out, headed over for the hosts.

With time running out, Williams was a whisker away from winning it for the Penwaig.

Extra time brought no further goals so it went to spot-kicks, Nefyn prevailing 6-5 with the winning penalty scored Zac Allanson, who notched the winner in an earlier league meeting between the sides.
