BRAVING THE CHILL FOR ST DAVID’S DAY
Parades fall victim to big freeze but schools celebrate
THE big freeze saw many St David’s Day events cancelled – but it couldn’t stop these youngsters getting into the patriotic spirit.
Parades across North Wales fell victim to the weather.
A parade through Caernarfon town centre was also cancelled, but a number of fancy dress events and St David’s Day assembly’s went ahead at schools throughout North Wales.
But the snow and ice failed to dampen the mood in Wrexham, as its procession went ahead with some minor route alterations.
Further celebrations involving market stalls and singing planned for were moved from Queens Square to the Memorial Hall on Bodhyfryd.
A parade in Denbigh and a festival at Llangollen Pavilion were cancelled, while a parade planned for Church Street, Flint, will now take place at 10am on March 7.
It was a similar story on Anglesey where Holyhead’s parade has been delayed by a week.
Helen Williams, head of Menter Iaith Môn, one of the organising partners, said: “After all the tremendous hard work and co-ordination by community organisations, schools, businesses and individuals, it is very disappointing that the weather has forced us to postpone the parade and to cancel a concert that included Only Boys Aloud, Holyhead Male Voice Choir, Magee Brothers and Sophie Jane.”
She added: “However we know how much the children of Holyhead were looking forward to their St David’s Day parade so we rescheduled it for 9.30am on March 8.”
