SNOW JOKE

Warning after ill-equipped climbers filmed struggling up peak

-

THIS i is th the h heartstopping tt i moment t t two people appear to climb an unforgiving section of Snowdon without the right safety equipment.

A video of the pair struggling up the Pyg track on Snowdon on Friday was shared on social media.

Fears were raised that ice axes and crampons – sets of spikes fitted to boots for climbing on ice – were not being used.

The equipment is considered vital for climbing tough terrain during wintry conditions.

Footage shows the two struggling on the climb, while others at the top stand watching them making their way up the mountain.

Alun Allcock, chairman of Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, said preparation was key before attempting such a climb.

He said: “We would advise all walkers looking to go up Snowdon and the surrounding peaks to go prepared and that will make their day that bit more enjoyable.

“Snowdon in winter is a very different proposition and you should always carry additional warm clothing together with crampons and ice axe which are essential items as all the routes to the summit are covered in ice and snow currently.

“Batteries don’t like the cold so you should consider carrying spares and not rely too heavily on electronic mapping or a phone as your only method of navigation.”

He added a compass and paper map should also be carried.

Mr Allcock said: “A group shelter or blizzard vest is handy to have in your group if you have to spend any time not moving.

“Please check the up-to-date mountain weather forecast and conditions.

“Current conditions reports can be found by following ‘Eryri Warden Report’ on Twitter and are posted on signs at all the routes onto Snowdon.

“It’s worth also checking the mountain weather forecasts provided by the Met Office and BBC Wales News.”
