RGC up to third

-

RGC vaulted up to third place in the Premiership with a nine-try, 64-21 demolition of Cardiff at the Arms Park on Monday.

In front of the live TV cameras, the visitors got off to a stormer, taking an early lead when Tiaan Loots burst through for a try, which Jacob Botica converted.

The away tally was soon doubled when scrum-half Alex Schwarz rounded off a great passing move with a touchdown, Botica adding the extras.

The Gogs left the Blue and Blacks stunned again as the ball was fed wide to Iolo Evans, who touched down in the corner.

The bonus point was soon secured as Mark Jones’ side registered again when a great break and passing move ended with an Evan Yardley try, Botica boosting with the boot to make it 26-0.

Shellshocked Cardiff struck back when scrum-half Rhodri Cole dotted down and Gareth Thompson converted.

Botica missed a penalty, but the North Walians were in inspired form as they added a fifth try with just half an hour played.

This time, following slick passing among the backs, No15 Dion Jones escaped the home tackles and went over, Botica making it four out of five conversions.

Cardiff gave themselves some hope just before the break when centre Adam Jones crossed and Thompson improved for a 33-14 half time scoreline.

After the break a Botica penalty added to the travellers’ cushion.

Then RGC truly caught fire again with a superb try, breaking at speed from their own 22 with Loots and Tom Hughes combining and Yardley in support touching down. Botica converted.

Cardiff replied when flanker Luke Crocker claimed a third home try, Thompson maintaining his 100 per cent conversion record.

After soaking up pressure, the Gogs delivered a magnificent seventh try through Efan Jones on the counter, Danny Cross converting to bring up the 50 points.

There was no let-up from RGC with wing Rhys Williams racing in for another breakaway try and Dion Jones scoring his second, Cross converting both.
