Home win is great way to end season

- FOOTBALL: GWYNEDD LEAGUE

BONTNEWYDD ended their campaign with a pleasing 2-1 home victory over a Holyhead Town side which already had the Gwynedd League title in the bag.

It took a strong penalty appeal on 12 minutes to wake up the Harbourmen. Captain Tom Roberts appeared to be held back by Rhys Roberts but the referee waved play on.

Asa Thomas’ snap shot tested Bont keeper Carl Jones, who, before half time, produced fine stops from Roberts, Sion Davies and Thomas.

Early in the second half, Town substitute Barrie Lavelle fed Thomas out wide and his pinpoint cross was half-volleyed in at the near post by Davies.

The Harbourmen pressed for a second and decisive goal but, again, Jones was equal to Thomas’ shot.

Town paid the price for missed chances on the hour when Bont’s man of the match Dylan Price evaded two would-be challengers to fire past Rob Bentley from the the edge of the box.

Home pressure began to mount and, in the 81st minute, Ian Pleming got on the end of Sion Jones’ cross to power a header back across goal and into the far corner of the net for the winner.

With injury time approaching, a leftfooted piledriver from Holyhead’s Mike Edwards was well saved by Jones.

Menai Bridge Tigers romped to a 5-0 verdict at Talysarn Celts, Dafydd Healy, Owain Griffith, Andy Wannop, Gethin Davies and Owain Fon all on target.

Llanystumdwy and Gwalchmai shared a 2-2 draw, Sion Parry and Rhys Hughes striking for the hosts, who finished third in the table.
