All aspects of the artist are on show

FOR his latest art exhibition, the popular Welsh artist Colin See-Paynton has decided to include all three aspects of his fascinating work for the first time.

This major show, which opened at Ffin y Parc Gallery, Llanrwst, on Sunday, will showcase his drawings and paintings as well as his highly-collectable engravings.

In 1972, Colin moved to Wales and started teaching himself to be an engraver. He began making prints in 1980 and has since become one of the most successful and highly regarded wood-engravers in the UK.

“My first exhibition of prints at Ffin y Parc last year was a huge success – a sell out in fact,” said Colin.

“The prospect of this second exhibition was, for me, even more exciting, being much more broader in its scope. There will now be new oil paintings – large Snowdonia landscapes – together with some smaller wildlife canvases.

“There will be my limited edition wood engraving prints and, additionally, a selection of new graphite drawings.”

Gallery owner Ralph Sanders is excited by how wide-ranging this major show is.

“This is the first time Colin has combined these three separate but interlocking aspects of his work in one show,” he explained.

“According to Colin, ‘everything begins with a drawing’, and his drawings and paintings for this show pulse with the observations of the landscape and wildlife around him.”

Regarding his work Colin added: “Drawing is perhaps the purest and truest expression of our love of the world, purer even than the spoken or written word. With wood engraving there is no compromise just the black ink and the white of the paper. And painting is all colour and freedom.”

The show, which runs until Sunday, June 20, at the award-winning Conwy Valley-based gallery, is a joint exhibition alongside fellow Welsh-based artist Carl Chapple. Carl, from Barry, has specialised in portraiture and is Artist in Residence with Ballet Cymru in Newport.

“His delicate and intimate works are the result of this unique collaboration,” explained Ralph. “They are little jewels of grace and intensity and we are really pleased to include them in this show.” ● A joint show of Colin See-Paynton RCA, Hon RE, SWE ‘Paintings, Prints and Drawings’ and Carl Chapple RCA, ‘Small Works’ is on at Ffin y Parc Gallery, until Wednesday, June 20.
