Appeal won to build dream clifftop house
AHOMEOWNER has won the right to demolish his £2m Abersoch bungalow to build a ‘bold’ clifftop property.
The 100 year-old ‘The Shanty’ property on the exclusive Benar Headland was bought in 2016 for £2.2m – apparently making it the most expensive home in Wales that year.
But owner Nigel Andrews wanted to knock down the home to clear the land for a three storey dwelling.
After having his modern replacement rejected by Gwynedd council- lors his agent Cadnant Planning appealed to the Welsh Government planning inspectorate.
They have overturned the council decision although the local authority will not have to pay Mr Andrews’ costs as the inspector concluded they had not acted “unreasonably”.
Sioned Edwards, from agent Cadnant Planning, said: “The inspector concluded that despite the fact that the dwelling subject of the appeal would be significantly larger in respect of its height and scale than the existing single storey dwelling, the proposed dwelling would not consti- tute over-development of the site and would not harm the character and appearance of the area.
“The inspector agreed that inin line with national and local planning policy, the proposed dwelling designed by Raise Architects was a high quality and innovative development wwhich enhances the local enviroronment.”
Planning officers at the ccouncil had recommended the ddevelopment for approval.
But the planning committee ssaid the scheme was an “overdevelopment” of the site which lies in an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’(AONB).
