Call of the wild
THE hunt is on for two willing castaways needed to look after a remote Welsh nature reserve. Located on the tiny island of Bardsey (Ynys Enlli), this rare job opportunity is a sharp contrast to the fast-paced lifestyle of a busy city.
If you love wildlife, rugged landscapes and the great outdoors, you and your partner – or friend – have the chance to live and work together on the idyllic yet secluded island.
Dubbed a “challenging but rewarding oppor- tunity” as the new wardens, you will be required to manage the island and its 20 Grade II listed buildings – 10 of which become holiday lets over the summer months.
You will also be responsible for recruiting and managing volunteers over the course of a threeyear contract, as well as be an active part of the community. The roles also involve managing the nature reserve’s sea birds and seals.
Candidates must be “physically fit” as you will be expected to maintain island infrastructure, which includes building works, painting and decorating, routine repairs and gardening
Bardsey also has a number of ancient monuments which will need to be looked after.
For an annual salary of £16,500 for the warden and £8,000 for the assistant warden, a couple can stay on the island for free in a two-bedroom home with all utilities included.
The warden and the warden’s assistant are also expected to greet and ensure the comfort of visitors during the summer months.
However, the winter months are quieter so successful applicants will need to be “prepared to live in isolation for long periods at a time.
The ability to speak Welsh is essential.
Located two miles off the tip of the Llŷn Peninsula, Bardsey Island is home to a small community of local residents.
The boat service to and from the island is provided by a private operator and Trust will pay for one trip per month for the post holders.
The closing date for applications is July 23 and competition will likely be fierce.
