FLOWERBED ‘DANGEROUS’

Housing chiefs back down over order to remove residents’ display:

- Eryl Crump

KILLJOY housing chiefs ordered a flowerbed planted by residents to be removed because it was ‘dangerous’.

The colourful display was planted at the beginning of spring on the verge near where buses turn around at Rhyd Fadog, Deiniolen.

But last week officials at Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd (CCG) decided the flowerbed was too dangerous and ordered it be removed.

Sarah Lloyd, from Llanberis, said: “If that’s the case they should take the estate sign down in case someone injures themselves on that. It’s more dangerous than a marigold.”

Another villager said: “It’s complete nonsense. That flowerbed is just our attempt to brighten up the area. The flowers have brightened up the verge.”

Lona Baum Lewis added: “What next? CCG should be pleased the area looks so nice and that there are those in the area who are prepared to do the work voluntarily.”

And Sian Roberts, writing on the Deiniolen Facebook page, pointed out other villages have similar floral displays.

She said: “Llanberis have a kayak planted with flowers on the outskirts of the village.

“Bontnewydd have them all through the village and they look lovely.”

Housing chiefs have since backed down and said the bed can remain.

A spokesman said: “Following discussion with the community council and local councillor, we are happy for the flowerbeds to remain and we are grateful to them for working with us to ensure that the flowerbeds are maintained.”
