Saw point for Andrew:
GWYNEDD woodchoppers Andrew Evans, Terry Hough and Bill Huaki will be going for glory when they take part in the Stihl Timbersports British Championship, which is taking place at BBC Countryfile Live in Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, this Saturday.
Nefyn man Hough, Evans, from Bethesda, and Mynydd Llandygai hopefuls Huaki are all competing in the international extreme sports competition series that involves athletes sawing, slicing and chopping wood at speed, using axes and saws.
Fifteen of the country’s best athletes will compete at the British Championships, with all competitors taking part in the six Stihl Timbersports disciplines – the Underhand Chop, the Stock Saw, the Standing Block Chop, the Single Buck, the Springboard and the Hot Saw.
Athletes are scored using a points system, with the competitor who completes the discipline quickest receiving 15 points, while the slowest receives one point. The overall winner is the athlete who scores the most points in all six disciplines.
The winner will qualify for the individual competition at the 2018 Stihl Timbersports World Championship. Four athletes will also be selected to represent GB in the team relay event in the disciplines of Stock Saw, Underhand Chop, Single Buck and Standing Block Chop.
The World Championship will take place in the UK for the first time in its history at Echo Arena Liverpool on October 19 and 20.
Evans is a full-time project manager and has been competing in woodchopping events for approximately 13 years. He finished fourth at last year’s British Championship and was team captain for Great Britain at the last worlds in Lillehammer, in 2017.
He said: “The British Championships is a really great experience and I’ve competed at them for quite a few years now. I don’t know how it’s going to play out this year, it depends how everyone does on the day.
“I’ve been in the GB team since 2007 and It would be great to represent Great Britain at the World Championships in Liverpool later this year, especially as Great Britain is going to be the home nation.”
