Support for LGBT teens on mental health issues

-

TEENAGERS in North West Wales who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender are being given support to deal with some of the unique challenges which can affect their mental health.

Staff from Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board’s Arfon Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) recently held a mental health awareness day at North West Wales’ first LGBT youth club in Caernarfon.

The all-day event included workshops aimed at raising awareness of common mental health problems and the steps teenagers from the LGBT community can take to look after their emotional wellbeing.

It forms part of wider multi-agency efforts to prevent mental ill health and develop resilience in children and young adults amid a steep rise in referrals to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) across the UK.

“If you’re experiencing any difficulty – if you’re finding that you’re anxious or your mood is becoming really low or you’re having unusual experiences – it’s really important not to hide away and to not have any shame about it. It’s important that you seek help from someone you trust to help you and don’t let things build up,” said a CAMHS spokesperson.

The Youth Club takes place every other Monday night, 6-10pm and is open to 14-21 year olds. For further information please contact lgbt@gisda.co.uk
