Quarrymen suffer setback to champs to leave escape hopes rocking

BLAENAU Ffestiniog are third from bottom in the North Wales Coast Bowling League’s Division A following a narrow 7-5 home loss to champions Min-y-Don last Saturday.

Iwan Vaughan Jones (21-9) was top block for the Quarrymen, who drew 5-5 on games but finished 13 chalks behind in the aggregates.

Caernarfon remain just clear of the relegation places in Division B, despite a 7-5 home reverse at the hands of Prestatyn Highbury.

Mal Burns produced the best card for the Cofis of 21-13.

Penygroes are second in Division D and well on course for promotion after seeing off table-toppers Copperfiel­ds 9-3.

The home side benefited from two walk-overs, while Peter Hanks starred with a 21-4 result, Eilir Jones and Fred Stansfield both winning 21-6. ● Bethesda’s annual open pairs’ competitio­n is being arranged for the Sunday of the Bank Holiday Weekend (August 26), with a 10.30 am start.

Entry fees are £10 per pair and £5 for under-18s juniors, with the organiser being Dilwyn Owen on 01248-600074. ● Preparatio­ns are going ahead for the Tom Towart Perpetual Trophy open singles’ competitio­n, being hosted as usual by the Benllech club on the Bank Holiday Monday, August 27.
