Penthyn pen a winning start

-

PENRHYNDEUDRAETH made the ideal start to the season with a hardearned 2-0 win over a Llanrwst United side which finished sixth in Welsh Alliance Division One last term.

The hosts took the lead with 82 seconds on the clock, when a cross from Adam Griffiths cleared everyone and found Alun Hughes unmarked at the back post.

Hughes slotted home to give Penrhyn a dream start.

The home side continued to dominate, but were unable to capitalise on the good chances that were created.

Nonetheless, they deserved their lead at the interval and some may have said they were unlucky not to be further ahead.

The second half was a different story.

Llanrwst were the better side and caused Penrhyn a lot of trouble.

They created a lot of very good chances and should have got a goal back on a couple of occasions.

Penrhyn, though, were always a threat going forward and, in the 80th minute, after a good bit of football on the edge of the Llanrwst area, Meilir Williams crossed from the left and set up Tomos Smith who steered the ball home.

The scoreline remained 2-0 - a good start to the season for Cockle Town.

Penrhyndeudraeth’s pre-season was given a big boost with the captures of striker Meilir Williams on loan from Porthmadog, as well as the arrival of young keeper Tyler French.

Port manager Craig Papirnyk feels Williams needs to be playing regular football to aid his development.

Last season, coming mainly off the bench, he scored 10 goals for Port.

Papirnyk said: “Mei needs to be playing football. As any normal centre forward, he needs games to get goals and his confidence up.

“I wish him all the best and I am sure we will see him return soon.”

One of the best young keepers in North Wales, French has rejoined Penrhyn, having also gained high-level experience at Porthmadog, Blaenau Amateurs, Barmouth and Bala Town.
