Amateurs will be test for ’Rug

-

AN interesting test is on the cards for Llanrug United this weekend when they visit lower league Llandudno Amateurs in the FAW Trophy second round (2pm).

Tudno play in the Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Premier Division, two levels beneath Welsh Alliance Division One side Llanrug.

If they are to progress, United may need to perform better than they managed in last weekend’s 2-1 league defeat at Prestatyn Sports.

’Rug commenced the match brightly, but found it hard on a very tight pitch.

The breakthrough finally came just after the half-hour mark. A free kick on the left 10 yards from the corner flag taken by midfielder Dylan Owen was mishandled by the hosts’ goalkeeper and striker Aaron Hughes pounced to give the visitors a deserved lead.

Within minutes Sports were back on terms, defender and captain Shane Middleman evading his marker and scoring with an unchallenged header at the far post.

Llanrug began the second half well, piling the pressure on, but the home defence held firm.

On 73 minutes, against the run of play, Sports took the lead, midfielder Ben Cawley on his debut with a header from a corner.

Despite the setback United drove forward and dominated possession for the reminder of the match, but failed to equalise.
