Celts do battle to make new head coach proud

-

CAERNARFON Celts Under-16s got off to a winning start under new head coach Sion Owen as the North Wales Junior Basketball League kicked off at Holywell last Tuesday with a game against Wrexham Warriors U-16.

With many moving up to this age group, the Celts players were keen to impress against tough opponents.

An outstanding offensive start in the first quarter from Celts guards Joe Hooton and Deio Llywelyn, along with a lock down man-to-man defence from the whole team meant the first period ended 19-3 to the Caernarfon outfit.

A sweet three-point shot from guard Derwyn Jones to start the second quarter signalled more of the same from the Celts as they continued to turn the screw on offence and defence, ending the half 32-9 up.

Warriors regrouped for the second half, slowing the Celts offence, but a determined Cofis defence made it increasingly difficult to significantly close the points gap, The game eventually ended 54-22 to the Celts.

Head coach Owen said: “I was proud of all the lads today, every single one of them had a superb attitude and work ethic, with notable performances from our younger players, who brought energy and spirit to the Celts’ game.” MVP and Top Scorer for Celts was Joe Hooton with 21 points.

Celts U-16s were due to start their season against Bangor City last night (Tuesday). Celts Seniors begin their campaign with a local derby against the Caernarfon Kings tomorrow (Thursday) at the Brailsford Centre.

Celts have recently started a mini basketball session for primary school years 3 to 6 on Mondays at the Arfon Tennis Centre between 6-7pm costing £3.
