Port cup tie is dream of a derby for Pwll

- Dave Jones

PWLLHELI have landed a dream Welsh Cup tie at home to illustrious neighbours Porthmadog.

The Llyn clubs will meet in the first round proper of the national knockout on October 20.

While Pwll compete in Welsh Alliance Division Two and Port two levels higher in the Huws Gray Alliance, anything can happen in cup football.

Pwllheli certainly deserve their place following last Saturday’s superb 4-3 victory at WAL Division One club Prestatyn Sports.

Mark Jones (2), Jake Jones and Gareth Jones-Evans shared the goals for the visitors.

Porthmadog, meanwhile, enter the Cup at the first round stage.

Craig Papirnyk’s men were in awesome form last Saturday as they hammered Denbigh Town 6-0 at Y Traeth to stay fifth in the table.

Following a midweek 1-0 success at Holyhead Hotspur, Iwan Lewis on target, the red and blacks made it six points in four days with a ruthless demolition of Denbigh.

Town started brightly, but once Port got into their stride this was a one-way affair.

The hosts went ahead on 16 minutes with Sion Edwards and Ryan Taylor combining down the left for the latter to whip a dangerous cross to the back post where Rob Evans finished from close range.

A minute before half time, Shaun Cavanagh unselfishly set up Dale Davies for number two.

Just past the hour an excellent cross from Edwards was nodded in by Davies for his second.

Denbigh tried to get back into the game but chances were few as Port were now well in control. Any danger was ably marshalled by defensive rock Iddon Price.

A burst of three more goals in the space of just seven minutes rubbed salt in the Denbigh wounds.

A great lofted ball forward from Dewi Thomas put Cavanagh through on goal, and he rounded the keeper for a simple tap-in.

Evans struck again, then Taylor raced on to a cross from sub Sion Parry to convert at the back stick.

Back in the Welsh Cup, it was a mixed afternoon for other local sides.

Nantlle Vale edged past Mynydd Llandegai on penalties, the match ending 2-2 with Daniel Evans scoring twice for the Penygroes men.

However, Llanberis exited 4-3 at Holyhead Town, Ifan Mansoor, Cal McDonald and David Jones netting for the Darans, Llanrug United bowed out 3-1 at Llandudno Albion, Eifion Williams with a long-range consolation for the Eithin Duon men, and Penrhyndeudraeth flopped 4-1 at home to the underdogs, Coedpoeth.

In the next round, Nantlle Vale will visit Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League giant-killers Llandudno Amateurs.
