Rock-solid display from league leaders

BLAENAU Amateurs enjoy a six-point lead at the Welsh Alliance Division Two summit after an emphatic 4-1 victory over nearest rivals Glan Conwy last Saturday.

It was first versus second on consecutive weekends at fortress Cae Clyd, as Blaenau aimed to do to Glan what they had managed against Llannerchymedd seven days earlier.

The Amateurs wasted no time in getting down to business, taking just 12 minutes to find the net – and what a goal it was. A 25-yard rocket by the reliable Bryn Humphreys whistled into the top right-hand corner of the goal.

The Quarrymen almost doubled their lead a couple of minutes later, when Kieron Ellis was denied by a great save from the visiting keeper.

Then, just before the half hour, Blaenau’s top scorer Tom Hughes finished neatly after some fine work by Ellis.

Blaenau’s front men were causing havoc, and Glan did not threaten the Amateurs goal until the 43rd minute, when keeper Gethin Jones had to save brilliantly from a long range effort.

After the break, the Amateurs picked up where they left off, dominating play and impressing the Cae Clyd crowd with their effective, attacking style of football.

Humphreys should have made it three, but found himself running away from the goal having rounded the keeper and struck the ball wide.

However, he did redeem himself later when he put the game to bed with his second of the afternoon.

Impressive youngster Sion Aron Roberts almost made it four when he hit a thunderous strike from outside the box, beating the keeper only to see his missile rebound off the post.

With quarter of an hour left, Glan were gifted a goal after the Amateurs’ attempt at a quick free kick backfired, and the ball found itself at the feet of striker Jordan Phillips, who finished with ease.

With two minutes left, the deadly Tom Hughes put the game to bed with his 10th goal of the season.

A deserved victory for Ceri Roberts’ men, who are raising a few eyebrows with their fine early season form.

This Saturday, Blaenau welcome Pentraeth to Cae Clyd in the league, kick-off 2.30pm.
