Threat to cut youth’s head off with a pair of scissors

- Eryl Crump

AMAN who threatened to cut off a teenager’s head with a pair of scissors has been locked up.

Daniel Edward Donaghue approached the youth in the high street in Bangor and demanded £20 from him.

When the teen refused, the 28-year-old, from Maes Hyfryd in Garndolbenmaen, near Porthmadog, went into a nearby shop before approaching him again and producing a pair of scissors.

He told the youth: “I’m going to kill you.”

Donaghue admitted possessing a bladed article in public and threatening a person with it and was jailed for 16 months.

Judge Huw Rees, sitting at Caer- narfon Crown Court, said that, while he accepted the weapon wasn’t used and no-one had been injured, it was still a serious offence.

“The seriousness lies in the fact the production of a bladed article can escalate and serious injury and even death can occur,” he said.

Andrew Green, defending, said Donaghue accepted that what he did was wrong and had apologised when he was shown CCTV footage of the incident in a police station.

“Mercifully, it was a short-lived incident and no one was injured,” the barrister said.

Mr Green said Donaghue had pleaded guilty to the charge at the earliest opportunity and asked for full credit to be given.

Gareth Roberts, prosecuting, said the incident happened on Sunday, June 10.

“It was late afternoon and the young man was in the high street when he was approached by the defendant who demanded the £20 he alleged was owed to him,” said Mr Roberts.

“After going into a nearby shop, Donaghue re-emerged and told the youth if he didn’t pay he would be stabbed, and produced the scissors.

“A police officer heard raised voices and went to investigate and heard Donaghue say: ‘I’m going to kill you.’”

Other witnesses said they heard Donaghue say he was going to cut the youth’s head off.

The officer questioned Donaghue about why he had the scissors and he handed them over and was later arrested. A PENSIONER was airlifted to hospital after falling and suffering a head injury while walking in southern Snowdonia.

The 76-year-old woman was flown to Ysbyty Gwynedd after she fell while walking on Cader Idris on Sunday and was left in “considerable pain” due to injuries to her arms and head.

Mountain rescue crews were scrambled, alongside the Holyhead Coastguard helicopter.

A spokesman for Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team said: “The 76-year-old woman, from Sutton Coldfield, was part of a walking group making its way down the Pony Path from a successful trip to the summit.

“She had tripped and fallen forward onto both arms ,which had given way and resulted in her banging her head on the floor.”

The spokesman added: “With both arms injured, and with considerable pain from suspected fractures, the lady was unable to continue on foot, and assistance from the coastguard helicopter was requested by the team call-handler.

“Team volunteers reached the casualty and found the lady cold but in good spirits.

“[The helicopter] arrived on scene shortly afterwards and team members assisted the winchman paramedic in treating and preparing her for evacuation by helicopter.

“She was flown to Ysbyty Gwynedd for further assessment and treatment.”
