HEROES’ MEMORIAL: 1914-1918 The Bangor cathedral display of poppies commemorat­ing the end of the First world war will close on Remembranc­e Sunday , November 11 in an unique way. At a date on or around Armistice day (the time and date to be announced later) a group of young people from Bangor of the same age as those who died in the First world, 1914-1918 will read out the biographie­s of the city’s heroes who gave their lives in the conflict and who are commemorat­ed (most accompanie­d by a photograph), in Cofeb Y Dewrion (Heroes’Memorial) compiled by the Reverend W.J.Owen (Afallon) soon after the war. An appealis going out to relatives of the fallen to view the names compiled in the book on the Bangor cathedral Facebook page and to contact if they would like a biography (of a family member perhaps) read out to all present at this unique event. They and members of the public are then most welcome to attend at a time and date to be announced nearer the time. POPPY EVENT: The people of Bangor are invited to collect a poppy from the Cathedral on All Saints Day, November 1 if they now live in the house once the home of one of Bangor’s First World War heroes. The poppy can be collected between the hours of 10.30am and 3.30pm or arrange collection by phoning 01248 354999. They can check the addresses on the Bangor Civic Society website by following the link ‘Tools and Features >> Historical Sources >> Books, where the pages of the war dead are featured in the book Cofeb Y Dewrion (Parch WJ Owen). The poppy can then be returned in a special Service to remember the fallen on Remembranc­e Sunday, November 11 at 3.15pm. At the Service ten biographie­s of the Bangor dead along with the names of all the fallen will be read out by the young people of Bangor today. BANGOR BIRD GROUP: The next talk will be on Wednesday, November 7 when Dennis Atherton, a Bolton birder, will talk on “Western USA and Pelagic birding“. FESTIVAL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES: Bangor University is taking part in the Economic & Social Research Council’s Festival of Social Sciences, and invites the public to take part in a wide variety of events. Year 12 & 13 school pupils will visit the University on November 6 to take part in workshops and seminars discussing the different forms of injustice experience­d in the 21st century. Faces of injustice: Social sciences and social justice will enable young people to explore the sorts of injustices people face, and will highlight to the young students, the role that social science research can play in fighting these injustices, and finding solutions to social problems. Welfare reforms come under the spotlight on 9 November in an event which will bring together local authority workers, Department for Work and Pension representa­tives, advisers from the Citizens Advice Bureau, members of the public and academics to discuss Universal Credit: The challenge of welfare reform. Local people are being invited in to sample some activities brought to use via other cultures: an Adopted Cultures Day is taking place in Pontio between 10.30am and 4.30pm on Saturday, November 10, with demonstrat­ions, a talk and discussion and taster sessions of non-Western practices such as yoga, capoeira and salsa.

A year ago, Criccieth Town Council was awarded a grant from the Lottery Heritage Fund (The First World War, yesterday and today) for a project to Commemorat­e Criccieth’s Contributi­on in partnershi­p with Ysgol Treferthyr, Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor and Criccieth Memorial Hall. The week begins with the opening of an exhibition by Liz Saville-Roberts MP at 3pm on Sunday November 4. The exhibition will then be open every day during the week 11am-3pm. All the support we receive locally is an enormous help to those local people in crisis who are referred to the Foodbank by specialist agencies. Thank you everyone, with your help the Foodbank was able to give a total of 28 food packs in September, making a total for the year of 385. The number for the coming months is likely to increase as seasonal work ends and winter weather begins to take hold.
