Man guilty of child sex charges is spared jail
A MAN found guilty of serious sexual assault charges by a jury has been spared a jail sentence.
Kelvin Gwynedd Evans, 57, had denied two charges of indecent assault, one of inciting a girl to commit an act of gross indecency and a charge of rape.
The offences were committed in the 1970s when the victim was under 12 years old.
After a five-day trial, the jury found Evans (pictured), who lives in a caravan at Bryncir near Porthmadog, guilty of the first three matters but cleared him of the rape charge.
Sentence had been adjourned for the preparation of reports. Evans was handed a 12-month community order and must sign the sex offenders’ register for five years.
Judge Huw Rees said: “You are a man of hitherto good character and at your trial many people took the time and effort to write about your character.”
The judge noted there were aggravating features, including the victim’s young age at the time of the offences, their repeated nature and how they had caused her trauma.
The victim had confronted Evans over the allegations about 10 years ago but did not take it further at that point.
Sion ap Mihangel, prosecuting, said the victim had attended a meeting involving child care and it had all come flooding back. She complained to police in 2016 and Evans was later arrested. Evans had denied the allegations and claimed they were all false.
