Hard-fought victory for Town Ladies

-

CAERNARFON Town Ladies will travel to Briton Ferry Llansawel in the FAW Women’s Cup quarter-finals following last Sunday’s heroic 2-1 second round victory at Llanfair United.

A week after resigning from the Welsh Premier, the Canaries were given the go ahead to fulfill their Welsh Cup date in Powys, with membership of the North Wales League believed to be pending.

And the Cofis made the most of their opportunity by claiming a hard-earned success over the current NWWFL Division One leaders.

Caernarfon took the lead in the 39th minute against the run of play through Catrin Thomas.

Top-scorer for Town in their 2016/17 NWWFL title-winning season, Thomas dribbled past a few defenders before firing a great left-foot shot past the keeper.

Llanfair equalised before the break when Mary Griffiths struck.

In the second half, Caernarfon made it 2-1 early on when a Katie Louise Bowe free kick was dropped by keeper Tracey Godsell and Jade Cooke pounced to fire home.

After that, Llanfair dominated, Sarah Ellis spurning a great chance before Gemma Jones went close with a long-range effort.

Sophie Cook’s powerful strike looked a goal all the way, but Town keeper Sara Williams produced a magnificent save.

Welsh Cup quarter-final draw (Feb 10): Briton Ferry Llansawel v Caernarfon Town, Llandudno v Abergavenny, Cardiff City FC Women v Rhyl, Cyncoed v Cardiff Met.

In North Wales Women’s League Division One, Kinmel Bay edged a tight 4-3 verdict against Northop Hall. Lucy Perry (2), Jess Jones and Niomi Taylor provided the home goals, Lydia Ward, Eleanor Thomas and Gemma Williams ensuring Hall went close.

Prestatyn celebrated a great 3-1 victory at Pwllheli. Ellie McDonald (2) and Millie O’Connor were on the mark for the visitors, Hayley Rhys Williams for the hosts.

In Division Two, Thalia ChristianMcGrail’s wonder goal and an Elisa Williams double secured a 3-0 result for Corwen at much-improved Mountain Rangers.

Wrexham defeated Penrhyn Bay 18-0, Lauren Reese, Jodie Richards and Savannah Palin all netting four apiece, Kim Dutton adding a pair, and there was one each for Morgan Churchill, Megan Buckley, Lily Clifton-Stringer and Phoebe Rintoul.
