Thrilling 4-2 victory for the Penwaig fans

-

NEFYN United kept up their outstanding cup form when they defeated Gwalchmai 4-2 in a thrilling Bob Owen Memorial Trophy quarter-final.

The Anglesey side had previously beaten the Penwaig 2-0 at Maes Meurig in the league, but had also lost 5-0 to the same opponents in the Meditel Gwynedd Cup, so there was plenty of spice surrounding last Saturday’s latest meeting at Cae’r Delyn.

Gwalch took an early lead when Corey Sinnott’s fourth-minute free kick took a bad bounce in front of Nefyn’s young keeper Keirion Williams and found the net.

Almost on the half-hour mark, United were on level terms after a brilliant header from the returning Daniel Roberts left visiting keeper Robbie Williams a spectator as it flew into the goal.

In the 32nd minute, the hosts went ahead when Guto Roberts avoided a tackle and struck the ball low into the net.

With 40 minutes gone, the visitors were reduced to 10 men as captain John Jones was shown the red card for a professional foul on Guto Roberts.

The second half started just like the first, with chances created by both sides, but, on 50 minutes, the Penwaig went further ahead through Llion Jones, who beat a defender and planted the ball home from eight yards.

The match flowed from end-to-end, Nefyn’s keeper making up for that early mistake with a couple of great saves.

Gwalchmai pressure brought no reward and then it was the home side’s turn as no less than three times they broke through the defence and crossed the ball into the six-yard box, but on each occasion no-one was able to make contact.

They also should have struck on 71 minutes after good work by Llion Jones as he beat two defenders and attempted a shot which went wide, with Dylan Roberts unmarked and better positioned to score. This could have proved expensive for the Llyn Peninsula side as, a minute later, the visitors were back in the match through a thunderbolt from Gwion Thomas.

Extra time was now a possibility but, on 80 minutes, an own goal from Paul Evans of Gwalchmai sealed the victory for the home side.
