Sentence is an insult to her memory say family

-

THE family of a nurse killed in a horror crash say the sentence given to the man who caused her death is an “insult” to her memory.

Relatives of Rebecca Louise Edwards said they had been left with “a strong sense of injustice” after Osian Sion Hicks Thomas was jailed for six years for causing death by dangerous driving and banned from driving for 13 and a half years.

Ms Edwards’ 14-year-old daughter Medi, who lost her father when she was seven, had made a recorded statement which the judge at Caernarfon Crown Court viewed privately.

Prosecutor John Philpotts summarised the statement in court, saying Medi described her mum as “amazing”.

She said people loved her mum, who was such a good person.

Mr Philpotts added: “She was amazing and they had made plans to walk the Great Wall of China when she was 18. There was never a boring day with Mum.”

The teenager said she was unable to sleep and, when she did, would wake up crying.

Ms Edwards’ father Hefin Lloyd Jones stood with his son Aron as his daughter Amy read out a statement on behalf of the family.

Close to tears, Ms Jones said the world is a “poorer place without Rebecca”.

After the hearing, Ms Edwards’ family issued a further statement via North Wales Police.

It said: “In our eyes, no sentence will ever measure up to the crime committed which resulted in the death of our beautiful Rebecca.

“However, such a short sentence for taking a life, and depriving a child of her mother, is an insult to Rebecca’s memory and has left us with a strong sense of injustice.”
