New policy for housing

-

A new banding system that should make it easier for local people to get social housing has been brought in by Gwynedd council.

The new policy will divide applicants into four categories, from those ‘in urgent housing need with a strong Gwynedd connection’ down to those ‘with no housing need but with a Gwynedd connection.’

According to the portfolio holder for housing, the new policy will place more emphasis on prioritising local people in housing need while still allowing for the most urgent of cases to be processed quickly.

“The aim is to make the system easier for local people,” Cllr Craig ab Iago told Tuesday’s meeting, adding that the proposals had already been subject to a public consultation. “Every time a house became available in my area there were plenty of stories of local people being unable to obtain the houses. We’re trying to prioritise local people and those with a Gwynedd connection while still being ethical for those who are in urgent need, wherever they come from.

“The definition of the term ‘need’ is established by the Welsh government, although I also appreciate that everyone has a need for a home. I do think the new system is very innovative and proves we are trying to look after our own people.”

The new policy is expected to be in place by autumn while also proposing that applications for housing may be made via the council website for the first time. It’s expected those who have resided in Gwynedd for five years or more would be considered as ‘local.’
