Women robbed OAP the day after jewellery shop raid

- Eryl Crump

TWO women burgled a jewellery shop and then robbed a pensioner in his own home the next

day.

Mairwen Owen, 44, and Lynne Marais, 39, struck at the Reeves store in Pwllheli (pictured inset) late at night.

They smashed the window and made off with around £4,500 of merchandise.

Owen had only been released from prison four days earlier.

The day after the burglary, they went into Pwllheli pensioner Leonard Brett’s flat and took his wallet.

In his victim personal statement, shop owner John Muscat said he had been in business for more than 27 years and lived in the flat upstairs with his wife.

They were both in bed asleep when they heard the sound of the break in, on January 28, and the police were alerted. The court heard Mr Muscat’s wife had stopped him from going downstairs until the police arrived.

He said the burglary caused damage to the shop and stock was lost

Jailing both women at Caernarfon Crown Court, Judge Huw Rees said: “You are now both in your forties and it should be with a feeling of disgrace that you fall to be sentenced for a serious offence of dishonesty.”

Owen, of Pendalar, Caernarfon, and Marais, of Wordsworth Avenue in Bootle, Merseyside, had admitted the charges.

They were both jailed for 18 months. Defence barristers for both women told the court it was accepted the burglary offence crossed the custody threshold.

Dafydd Roberts, for Owen, argued the theft offence could be dealt with by way of a concurrent sentence.

He pointed out Owen had been badly injured in an altercation with the victim.

Marais had also been injured when confronted by Mr Brett, her barrister added.
