ABERSOCH BEACH FRONT STAYS IN DEMAND AT AUCTION
ASHABBY beach hut in Abersoch drew a few laughs when presented to auction – and then sold for a six figure sum.
Some of the line of small huts on Abersoch’s Porth Mawr have hit some staggering prices at auction in recent years – with the record standing at the £160,000 secured for a shack in summer 2017.
But last summer there was a slight dip in interest with one hut failing to make its reserve after bidding ‘only’ reached £90,000.
When this tatty 11ft by 10ft shed with its paint peeling was shown to the auction room at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Liverpool last Thursday – it drew a few titters from the bidders.
Sutton Kersh auctioneer Andrew Binstock joked “they sell anything these days” but went on to add that these are in very high demand.
He said: “I know the beach at Abersoch having been there myself, these beach huts are highly sought after.”
Bidding started at £100,000 and a bid was instantly received from the room.
The price quickly rose in £2,000 chunks to £110,000.
Despite attempts to tease out a few thousand pounds more from the room the price
remained at that level when the gavel came down.
The buyer of the hut has not been revealed.
But with £110,000 in their pocket the seller had the last laugh.
Katie Donohue, auction valuer/business development manager at Sutton Kersh Auctions, said: “It is a very well known popular tourist location that attracts people from all over. It’s not too often that something like this will come up for sale in such a prominent position.”
The new buyer should note that local planning policies prohibit the connection of any mains services to the building – including water, drainage or electricity –and the beach hut cannot be slept in overnight.
