N.Wales activists join Extinction Rebellion protest
CLIMATE change activists from North Wales took part in an Extinction Rebellion protest in Cardiff on Monday.
They blocked transport routes in the city as part of a non-violent, coordinated uprising across England, Scotland and Wales.
Other cities affected include Bristol, Leeds London and Glasgow.
The disruption is expected to last for a number of days as protesters call on the Welsh and UK governments to halt biodiversity loss and cut greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
It comes as part of a wider national rebellion called the Summer Uprising that is taking place in five cities across the UK.
Macey, 20, from Bethesda, who is coordinating the local North Wales group in Cardiff, said: “I don’t want my future children or their children to suffer at the hands of the climate crisis.”
Paula, a 49-year-old business owner from Llanberis, said simply: “I’m going, because this matters.”
Not everyone is in support of the protesters’ actions.
Conservation South Wales Central AM, Andrew RT Davies said: “Tackling climate change is a hugely important issue and one which the majority of the public is fully behind.
“However, the one sure way to lose hearts and minds in such a battle is to disrupt hardworking people on their morning commute, which is what’s happened in Cardiff today.”
On Thursday, XR’s The Time is Now tour arrives in Penrhyn Hall, Bangor. There will be a talk and discussion starting at 7.30pm on the ecological crisis.
