Five years inside for molesting two kids
AMAN who insisted two women had lied about him molesting them when they were children has been locked up.
Karel Vaughan Wood, 63, from Deiniolen near Caernarfon, had denied charges of indecent assault and inciting a child under 14 to commit an act of gross indecency and stood trial at Caernarfon Crown Court.
After a four-day trial, the jury of six men and six women unanimously found
him guilty of all the charges. He was jailed for five years. Jailing Wood, Judge Huw Rees said: “These offences are so serious only a custodial sentence is justified.”
During the trial, the jury heard the offences against one of the victims took place more than 30 years ago, and the other charges related to offences committed in the 1990s.
It was said that the oldest victim had complained to her mother about what Wood had done.
Prosecutor Elen Owen said no formal report had been made to the authorities at that stage.
The woman mentioned the abuse to other officials in the following years but no action was taken.
Years later, the women learned that they had both been abused by Wood.
A complaint to the police was made and he was interviewed.
Giving evidence in his defence, Wood said the two women were lying to the jury.
He insisted their accounts had been fabricated and that other witnesses had given evidence based on what the two women had told them.
Asked by Ms Owen about the offences, Wood said: “They never happened.”
Challenged that his denials were nonsense, Wood added: “I’m telling the truth about all of this.
“None of this ever happened.”
In addition to the jail term, Wood was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for an indefinite period.
He must not contact either of the two women directly or indirectly.
