Ambitious Blaenau ready for season

- Football

TEAMS return to action in the Welsh Alliance this weekend as the football season kicks off.

And Blaenau Ffestiniog Amateurs, who host Llandyrnog United, have shown their ambition ahead of their move up to the Welsh Alliance Division One.

The Quarrymen have secured the services of Penrhyndeudraeth striker Meilir Williams ahead of the upcoming campaign, which represents a significant coup for the newlypromoted outfit.

Williams was one of the third tier’s standout performers last term thanks to a series of clinical displays that saw him finish top of the scoring charts with 28 goals for the season.

The club also announced the signing of midfielder Sion Wyn Jones to further boost a squad that emerged as Division Two’s surprise package last term.

They enjoyed a tremendous campaign and sat at the summit for the majority of the season, before eventual champions Glan Conwy moved above them with a final fixture win over Pwllheli to clinch the crown.

This was not enough to deny the Quarrymen promotion thanks to a second placed finish, with the side looking to make an impact and follow in the footsteps of Bodedern and Prestatyn Sports in achieving high finishes in their first campaign back at this level.

Despite the obvious disappointment of just missing out on the title, Blaenau are looking forward to being in Division One this season and the new signings are clear evidence of this.

Elsewhere in the division, Llanberis begin their campaign at home to the Division Two champions Glan Conwy while Nantlle Vale host St Asaph City and Penrhyndeudraeth have a trip to Llandudno Albion.

In Division Two, Felinheli go to Gaerwen while Pwllheli are at home to Aberffraw.

In the Gwynedd League, Llanystumdwy start with an away clash at Bro Goronwy and Waunfawr travel to Menai Bridge Tigers while Nefyn United host Bethesda Athletic.

All games take place on August 10, kick-off at 2.30pm.
