THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2

-

★★★★★

(PG) (U) THERE is a whole lot of feathery fun to be had in this animated sequel which brims with colourful energy, dashes of earthy adult humour and a breezy central message about loving thy neighbour.

As the film starts, Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), the angriest of those angry birds, is in his element leading the ballistic battles with their enemies on nearby Pig Island.

But when they are faced with an icy bombardment from a third island, a nation of eagles led by the evil, eccentric purple-feathered Zeta (wonderfully voiced by Leslie Jones), the birds and pigs must come together to survive.

Cue a joint piggy/bird mission to infiltrate the island and take out Zeta’s dastardly volcano-powered weapon.

The whole thing is packed with laughs, action and, yes, an obligatory happy ending. We even get a little romance as angry-eyebrowed Red grudgingly falls for science nerd Silver (Rachel Bloom), whose brainpower more than matches his belligerence. the kingdom. The curse will only be lifted by a ‘love’s true kiss’ before he turns 21, otherwise all love in the world will vanish.

Soon our Prince is off on a quest with the disguised-asa-man Lenore (Demi Lovato), the only woman immune to his charm.

Adventures are had, quests are undertaken and dangers are faced before the expected schmaltzy ending.

It is all nicely put together, with the breezy and boisterous animation aimed squarely at the Frozen fan and it certainly hits the fairy tale mark at times.

Pleasantly diverting, but no fantasy classic.
