Students praised after success

- Rhodri Barker

EDUCATION chiefs have praised teenagers from Abergwyngregyn to Aberdyfi following “pleasing” results across the board, with many now going on to university.

“We should be proud of the success of our young people,” said Cllr Cemlyn Rees Williams, Gwynedd Council’s cabinet member for education.

“The students are to be congratulated for their dedication and perseverance and I offer my sincere gratitude to the teachers for their hard work during the year and for preparing students so thoroughly for the examinations.

“I would like to wish our young people all the best in their careers.”

The headteacher of Caernarfon’s Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen was also delighted with the school’s results.

“It’s great to celebrate excellent A level results at Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen with 95.2% achieving an E grade or above in two or more subjects (Level 3 Threshold), 57.1% achieving the equivalent of three or more A * - C grades , with more pupils than ever gaining the equivalent of 3 A * - A,” said Rhian Parry Jones.

She added that all pupils wishing to enter higher education had been accepted onto courses, with all but one being admitted onto their first choice course.

Neil Foden, the head of Bangor’s Ysgol Friars, added: “We’re really pleased with our results.

“Against some indicators, they are our best ever and I’ve seen so many students

this morning overjoyed by their results and at having secured their chosen courses at some of the UK’s top universities.”

Meanwhile, building on the success of previous years, Coleg Menai’s Bangor campus achieved 100% pass rate across all subjects with over 31 % of students achieving A*-A and 92% achieving A*-C.

Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor’s Pwllheli campus also achieved excellent results, with over 31% of students achieving A*-A grade, an increase of 15% compared to last year.

Overall, 99.5% of learners achieved A*-E at the campus.

One Coleg Menai student was not able to pick up his results today, as he is currently on a commercial aircraft pilot training course with EasyJet.

Dewi Appleton-Davies, from Caernarfon, gained an A* in Psychology, Maths (A), English Literature (A) and English Language (A).

At the Grwp’s Pwllheli campus, Bryn Matheson Hughes, 18, from Rhyd Ddu, is also celebrating after hearing that he will be jetting off to San Francisco to study at the renowned Stanford University.

Bryn achieved an A* Maths, A* Physics, A Electronics, B Computer Science, B Welsh Baccalaureate and BAS Further Maths.

Nathaniel Davies from Dolgellau scooped 4 A*s in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Law and will be going to study at Warwick University in September.

Reflecting on the positive results, the Grwp’s Chief Executive, Dafydd Evans, said: “This is fantastic news for our students and sets them up very well for a successful future whether in higher education or in the workplace.

“I am particularly proud of our outcomes at our campuses in Bangor and Pwllheli, where results are outstanding.”

Garem Jackson, Gwynedd Council’s head of education, added that he was extremely pleased with the A Level results of students in Gwynedd secondary schools.

“Once again this year, it’s a pleasure to state how pleased I am with the results in Gwynedd schools,” he said.

“I would like to thank the schools and the teachers most sincerely for their hard work and professionalism, the students for their exceptional efforts and their families for their constant support.”

Mr Jackson drew attention to outstanding performance in individual subjects: “Although the numbers sitting examinations vary substantially across subjects, it is pleasing to note that the results are very good in Welsh, Physics, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Biology, English Literature and Art and Design.

“The Skills Challenge Certificate (Welsh Baccalaureate) was introduced in September 2015 and is equivalent to an A Level. It is pleasing to see candidates’ success in the qualification.”

He also referred to the students’ success in the Advanced Subsidiary examinations and wished them all the very best in their A levels next year.
