MAN FACES CHARGE AFTER CAMP SITE HORROR

Arrest for dangerous driving as woman left critical after car ploughs into tents

- Owen Evans

A WOMAN was left fighting for her life after a car ploughed through her tent at a campsite.

Four campers – two men and two women – were injured, one critically, when a vehicle being driven on the Rhyd y Galen campsite near Caernarfon ploughed into their tents in the early hours of Monday morning.

North Wales Police said yesterday one of the women remained in a critical condition in hospital while the other three campers have been discharged.

Officers are continuing to appeal for any witnesses, or anyone with information, to contact them.

Detective Chief Inspector Sion Williams said: “This was a terrifying event for people who should have felt safe in their tents.

“North Wales Police are supporting those involved and our thoughts are with the family of the woman who has been seriously injured.

“I would like to thank those members of the public who have helped us, but if anyone has not been spoken to yet and has any information which could assist, then please contact us.

“Our roads policing unit is working with detectives to establish exactly what happened.

“We are asking anyone with any information relating to the incident to contact us.”

Paramedics, firefighters and police officers were called to Bethel Road near Caernarfon at around 2am on Monday after the vehicle crashed.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said on Monday: “We were called at approximately 2.02am to reports of a collision between a vehicle and a tent in Caernarfon. We responded with two emergency ambulances.

“One patient was transported to Ysbyty Gwynedd Hospital, Bangor.”

The fire service also confirmed that they had been called to the scene of the crash, but were unable to provide details of what they did at the scene.

Yesterday afternoon, a man was charged following the incident.

DCI Sion Williams said: “As a result of this disturbing incident the Crown Prosecution Service has authorised charging a 26-year-old man from the Manchester area with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, dangerous driving, driving otherwise in accordance with a driving licence, driving a motor vehicle without insurance and failing to provide a breath specimen for analysis.”
