Protest against move to suspend Parliament

-

PROTESTS against Boris Johnson were held in North Wales by demonstrators furious at the suspension of Parliament.

Impromptu events were held in major cities around the UK within hours of the news Prime Minister Boris Johnson had been given permission by the Queen to prorogue the current parliamentary session.

The move has been seen by many as an attempt to derail attempts to create legislation that could stop Britain ending up with a no-deal exit from Europe on October 31.

In North Wales, a protest took place in Caernarfon on Thursday evening. An estimated 200 demonstrators took to the town’s square to show their opposition against Johnson’s decision.

Plaid Cymru AM Sian Gwenllian, who spoke at Thursday night’s rally, was unhappy about the Parliament suspension.

She said: “One man wants to push Brexit by shunning democracy in a dangerous and cynical way. His aim – to advance himself. To advance Boris and his repulsive ideology.

“But Wales rejects Boris, and more and more people want another way – our way, where we stand on our own two feet and steer our own future.

“That’s why I was proud to address the rally in Caernarfon last night.”

Another rally took place in Bangor on Saturday.

The organiser, Owen J Hurcum, the deputy mayor of the Gwynedd city had expressed his disappointment at the Prime Minister’s decision, and regarded it as ‘undemocratic.’

He said: “Although I wasn’t surprised that it happened, I don’t think it should be allowed to be normalised.

“Now, rallies have been taking place across the UK.

“I decided to host this protest in Bangor because I think it is important that we stand united, show that we are not OK with this attack on our democracy, and send out a strong message.”
